MEN'S SKINCARE, ARE WE THERE YET?
Is it déjà vu all over again? Or has the modern male finally woken up and smelled the serum?
For decades, the "men's skincare boom" was a classic case of statistical mirage, with marketers celebrating impressive growth percentages off a tiny base. Every few years we'd hear about a 40% surge in men's skincare, only to discover that sales had moved from almost nothing to slightly more than almost nothing.
This is something I pointed out time and again as I was challenged by company executives and sales organizations eager to launch the next great men's skincare line. More than once, I found myself participating in programs targeting an audience that couldn't even say the word "exfoliator." The truth was that the market for elevated skincare was overwhelmingly female.
For most men, skincare was simply a subset of grooming. And for the typical guy, that often meant stepping into the shower with a bar of soap and doing his thing—probably more than we would want to know about.
But the market is finally showing signs of evolving. No, men haven't suddenly embraced 10-step luxury routines. Yet the traditional boundaries between grooming, wellness, and skincare are becoming increasingly blurred.
Today's Reality Check: Shaving vs. Advanced Skincare
We're finally seeing meaningful movement in the male skincare market. While shaving and beard care still represent a substantial share of men's grooming purchases, facial skincare—cleansers, moisturizers, eye treatments, and targeted serums—has firmly established itself as a category in its own right.
And the growth is no longer just a math trick on a tiny base. Increasingly, it is being driven by loyal male consumers who routinely repurchase facial cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, and treatment products.
All Men Are Created Equal, But ...
... their skincare habits vary dramatically by generation.

The male consumer is no longer a monolith. Today's market is segmented into distinct behavioral profiles that influence everything from product selection to purchasing channels.
Many Gen X and Boomer men still enter the category primarily to address a specific concern—dryness, irritation, razor burn, sensitivity, or visible signs of aging. Younger consumers, however, have a fundamentally different relationship with skincare.
Millennial men are often characterized as "stress-and-prevention" consumers. They are willing to pay a premium for products that fit efficiently into their routines and address concerns such as fatigue, dark circles, early signs of aging, and skin barrier support.
Gen Z is the first truly skincare-native generation. They grew up in a world where beauty and self-care are no longer constrained by traditional gender norms. They have high trial rates, are heavily influenced by online reviews and social content, and are remarkably ingredient-aware for their age
Discarding the Old "For Men" Playbook
The premium brands winning trial and loyalty today are not the ones that simply package basic lotion in a dark gray bottle with a sandalwood fragrance.
Instead, they appeal to men who are becoming increasingly literate in ingredients and want evidence that justifies a prestige price tag. They are also drawn to brands that connect skincare with broader wellness, recovery, stress management, and longevity goals.
Recent market insights suggest that the modern male's routine has become more intentional, incorporating multifunctional products and practices that blend grooming with wellness and self-care.
Reframing Lymphatic Massage for Men's Skincare
Men don't necessarily need a separate regimen of products. The same formulations that support resilient, healthy-looking skin in women can also support skin health and resilience in men.

For younger men struggling with oily or blemish-prone skin, Solvasa Golden Harmony Cleansing Mask helps absorb excess oil with natural kaolin clay while supporting a balanced skin microbiome through a blend of adaptogens and postbiotic lysates.
Men of all ages can also benefit from what may be the ultimate skincare biohack: Solvasa's vibrating Crystal Energy Wand. When paired with fragrance-free DeStressance Serum, this ritual helps support circulation, lymphatic flow, facial tension release, and the emerging science of the skin-brain connection—all while creating a mindful moment in an otherwise stressful day.
Men Will Be Men

Yes, younger men have embraced a higher level of skincare and wellness. But don't count out Gen X and Boomers just yet.
As men of all ages experience the effects of chronic stress, poor sleep, environmental aggressors, and what many now call "Zoom fatigue," self-care has moved well beyond the fringe. What was once dismissed as a niche wellness practice has become part of the broader conversation around performance, resilience, healthspan, and longevity.
That said, men are unlikely to become traditional beauty consumers. And that's okay.
Because perhaps they're becoming something even more interesting: wellness and performance aficionados who happen to appreciate healthier skin as part of the package.
